Weight Loss Declarations (Prov 23:7 As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.)
Please list the most important and the most joyful things in life to you (motivators to do the exercise below):
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The subconscious mind believes what it hears most often. Does what comes out of your mouth have anything to do with your body size? Dietitians are learning that it just as important of what goes in the mouth. One doctor said, “Telling yourself you will never lose weight is as damaging as eating an entire bag of chips.” There is an interesting in a book called, What to Say When You Talk to Yourself by Shad Helmstetter. This author struggled with weight loss most of his life until he studied self-talk. Olympians use self-talk religiously. What about in the Olympics of weight loss so-to-speak? Shad spent months writing positive declarations about his weight loss and audio recorded himself reciting them 3 times each and then 1 time in a different tense. He then decided to listen to them every morning while shaving (his wife happened to be next to him putting on make-up). To their surprise, he lost 38 pounds and she lost 25 in only 10 ½ weeks! Helmstetter has never been on a diet since. His story is just one reminder that thoughts and words create reality. No wonder The Holy Bible encourages a renewal of our minds and the knowledge that death and life are in the tongue. Other studies show it takes 20 positive statements to counteract one negative one and also show negative talk leads to stress and depression. What’s worse is that one mistake can trigger us to remember past failures hence the need for words of life and positive reinforcement. Words are supposed to be tools to help us reach our goals...not weapons against us. Try Dr. Helmstetter’s exercise below or write your own declarations.

The Self-Talk Dr. Helmstetter used:
1-Each time I sit down to eat I reaffirm my determination to achieve my goal. By eating right and never giving in I am reaching the weight I want.
2-Whether eating in or eating out, I really enjoy eating less.
3-I never feel the need to finish the food in front of me, I eat only what I should and never one bite more.
4-One way to weight loss that’s easy and works, is less food on my plate, and less on my fork which means less on my waist.
5-When I sit down to eat, at no time do I allow anyone else to influence, tempt, or discourage me in any negative way.
6-What I eat, and the goals I reach, are up to me. And I give no one the right to hinder or control my success.
7-I am good at shopping for food. I do not allow commercial advertising to influence my choice of foods. When I buy food, I take responsibility for the food I purchase and choose foods based on their nutritional quality and ignore brand names and fancy packaging.
8-Although others may benefit from my success, I am achieving my weight loss goals for m y own personal reasons – for myself, my life, my future, and my own personal well-being.
9-I am never at any time, tempted to take one bite more than I should, I am strong, I am capable to reaching my goal, and I’m doing it!
10-Being in situations which put a lot of food in front of me is not a problem to  me now I simply say “No” to the food and “Yes!” to my success.
11-I enjoy sitting down to eat. Each time I do I conquer my past, and I create a trimmer, happier, more self-confident future in front of me.
12-When I sit down to eat, I do not need someone else to remind me of my goal, or to keep me from eating something I should not. I take full responsibility for myself, and no one else has to do it for me.
13-Controlling my weight, and my appetite, is easy for me now. I enjoy smaller potions, smaller bites, and slower, healthier, more relaxed way of eating.
14-I have set my goal and I am staying with it. I have turned mealtime into “achievement time.”
15-You are in control of yourself in every way – at all times and in all situations. Each time you sit down to eat you reaffirm your determination to achieve your goal. By eating right and never giving in, you are reaching the weight you want. Whether eating in or eating out, you really enjoy eating less. You never feel the need to finish the food in front of you, you eat only what you should and never one bite more. One way to weight loss that’s easy and works, is less food on your plate, and less on your fork which means less on your waist. Do you have any bad habits? With just 5 minutes each day, you can improve your well being and actually change. How? I am so glad you asked.J  Research indicates stress reduction and healthy self esteem yields motivation to change behaviors. I have taught wellness for 15 years and I have made some interesting observations. I can help you by sharing what I have learned. I believe there are root issues related to our health choices. Most importantly is our esteem and secondly is our stress level. Let us not miss the obvious. If you do not master these two components, other attempts to improve health will most likely fail.
ESTEEM
Self esteem is respect for yourself and it then yields certain views and choices. Do you experience any of these behaviors/symptoms: wanting things perfect, saying “I’m sorry” often, finding it hard to say “no” to others, sensitivity to criticism, preference to be alone, hostility, excessive thoughts about personal problems, negativity, fatigue, insomnia and/or headaches.
Affirmations (verbal declarations) usually increase esteem and are proven methods of self-improvement because of their ability to rewire our brains. Much like exercise, they raise the level of feel-good hormones and push our brains to form new clusters of “positive thought” neurons. (arlenetaylor.org/brain-care/953-affirmation)  In the sequence of thought-speech-action, affirmations play an integral role by breaking patterns of negative thoughts, negative speech, and, in turn, negative actions. (psychologytoday.com/blog/wired-success/201305/do-self-affirmations-work-revisit)
Research from Carnegie Mellon University provides evidence that affirmations, which identify and focus on one's most important values, can protect against the damaging effects of stress and increase an individuals' problem-solving abilities. Additional research shows that positive affirmations, especially those with your name included, help with behavior change in individuals that have a healthy self esteem. With that in mind, an esteem level test can be found at:  psychologytoday.tests.psychtests.com/take_test.php?idRegTest=3207
Sample affirmations: All things are working together for (your name)’s good because I love God and I’m doing what I’m called to do. My thoughts are filled with hope and my life is abundantly prospering. Things are getting better and difficult times don’t last. Today, I abandon my old habits and take up new positive ones.
“Wholesome self-esteem is the conviction that one is as worthwhile as anyone else, but not more so. On one hand, we feel a quiet gladness to be who we are and a sense of dignity that comes from realizing that we share what all humans possess — intrinsic worth. On the other hand, those with self-esteem remain humble, realizing that everyone has much to learn and that we are all really in the same boat.”  (http://psychcentral.com/blog/archives/2012/01/30/signs-of-low-self-esteem/)

Plants are a rich source of nutritious substances. A large group of these compounds are substances with antioxidant activity that fights against free radicals and cellular damage.

In the family of Brassicaceae vegetables, Brassica, is the largest and most widely consumed group of plants in Europe and all over the world.  The beneficial effects of Brassica vegetables on human health have been linked to the presence of phytochemicals, metabolites, vitamin C, vitamin E, carotenoids, sulfur-organic compounds and antioxidants (polyphenols) that prevent oxidative stress, initiate detoxification, stimulate the immune system, and stop malignant cellular changes in numerous studies.

Brassicaceae foods include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, brocco-sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, kale, kohlrabi, Chinese cabbage, turnips, rutabaga and mustard seed.

Boiling reduces the level of anticancer compounds, but steaming, microwaving, and stir frying do not result in significant loss. Steaming the vegetable for three to four minutes is recommended to maximize sulforaphane.  Do not forget to flavor and garnish with olive oil, minced garlic and your favorite herbs like basil or dill. Enjoy daily!!!

Who LOVES CHOCOLATE??? Our Father in heaven loves us so much gave us the cocoa bean! Did you know having one sweet every day can be part of a healthy lifestyle plan? One story about the historic Valentine is that he was a physician gastronomist who made his medicines more palatable by mixing them with sweet honey. In some ways, chocolate is like sweet medicine. Even Hippocrates is famous for saying, "Let food be thy medicine..." There are medicinal affects in components of chocolate, especially dark chocolate that has not been highly processed with fermentation, alkalizing or roasting.

Antioxidants and flavonoids in chocolate may promote good health by:

-fighting inflammation of the circulatory system and lowering blood pressure
-increasing blood flow to the brain and improving memory and math performance
-protecting us from toxins and reducing cell damage that trigger tumor growth
-decreasing the oxidation of LDL, "bad" cholesterol that forms plaque on artery walls

Like any food, chocolate is not necessarily good for you in high quantities though. One ounce on most days seems to give the greatest benefit. Even better, eat a variety of foods and more flavonoid-rich ones like apples, grapes, tea and cranberries. Regarding our weaknesses, let's ask our Valentine, Jesus Christ, for another thing...the fruit of self control. This free gift is key for weight management.  His presence and bliss fills every part of our hungry existence with an everlasting joy that decrease negative emotions and stress-related, hunger signals.

Remember, our Creator made that sweet taste bud in our mouths for our pleasure and daily feasting on inspired scriptures keeps us in balance. Let us be realistic, avoid condemnation, and use what God gave us along with our new year resolutions. Thankfully enjoy a Valentine chocolate daily this February and know every good thing comes from above (James 1:17).
